Street artists dancing Greek sirtaki in Monastiraki
Monastiraki station is an interchange station on the Athens Metro, between Lines 1 and 3. The original “Monastirion” surface station on Line 1 opened in May 17, 1895. It became an interchange point of the network when the underground station of Line 3 opened in April 22, 2003. It is located in the historic center of Athens, near the neighborhood of Plaka. The station is right beneath the Acropolis and next to the site of the Ancient Agora of Athens.
Greek sirtaki or syrtaki (Greek: συρτάκι) is a popular dance of Greek origin, choreographed by Giorgos Provias for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. It is a recent Greek folkdance, and a mixture of the slow and fast rhythms of the hasapiko and hasaposerviko dance respectively.
